“This is who we are, mama. Real Women.”

Set in a tiny sewing factory in East L.A., the outrageously funny story of five full-figured Mexican-American women who are trying to keep their tiny factory from going under. And while they work, and hide from the INS, they talk... about their husbands and lovers, their children, their dreams for the future. This microcosm of the Latina immigrant experience celebrates real women's bodies, and the incredible bond that happens when women work together.

Roles:

Ana. Female. Age 18-20

Mexican American; sister of Estela, daughter of Carmen; pretty and plump; she is a recent high school graduate and a young feminist; smart, opinionated, kind of a dreamer but very practical; she reads a lot, like every kid at her age; she loves comics, Sylvia Plath, Dorothy Parker, Anais Nin and Anne Rice; she’s a nerd, a secret punk rocker and a Capricorn; she is waiting on her financial aid to come through, so she can attend college; Ana wants to be different from the older women in her family, so she purposefully does things different; she sometimes thinks she's better than "all of this” but has a secret appreciation for her culture; speaks Spanish

Carmen. Female. Age 40-50

Mexican American; mother of Ana and Estela; plain and plump; she loves her daughters and loves her family; she is your typical old school, very traditional Mexican Mama; she has a talent for storytelling; she knows the ways of the world and how things should be done because this is the way they've always been done; she doesn’t resent Ana’s ambition for wanting more, it's just that she worries that the potential of failure will hurt her.

Pancha. Female. Age 30-49

Mexican American; plus size with a plus size personality, a friend of Carmen and Estela and a worker at the Garcia Sewing Factory; smart, sassy and strong-willed; she is a very dedicated worker in the factory, says what she means and takes no bullshit from anyone; she is very comfortable with herself despite the fact that she cannot have children, something her social conditioning has raised her to expect from life; if she'd had more opportunities as a younger woman, she would be the foreman or the boss of something; sees Ana's potential for better things and supports it; speaks Spanish.

Estela. Female. Age 34

Plump. Plain-looking. Owner of the “Garcia Sewing Factory.” A hopeless romantic at heart, but a hard worker.

Rosali. Female. Age 29

Thin, sweet, and easygoing, but has a secret and is insecure about her sexual appeal.
